The copyright-free video checklist
Run through this before you publish, not after you get claimed. Every item is something you can check in a couple of minutes, and together they cover the reasons reused footage gets claimed, blocked or demonetized.
Before you edit
Know your source
Studio footage, broadcast sport and streaming series are all registered in matching systems. Assume a match will be found and plan for it rather than hoping.
Line up your audio
Pick licensed or royalty-free music before you cut, and keep the licence receipt. Retrofitting audio after the edit is far more work.
While you edit
Keep segments short
Break long uninterrupted runs of source footage into shorter clips with your own material between them.
Add real original content
Narration, analysis and your own footage carry weight if a claim is ever reviewed by a human.
Skip the old tricks
No mirroring, no 1.05x speed, no pitch shift, no borders. They do not beat matching and they visibly cost quality.
Export at delivery quality
Re-encoding at low bitrate does not defeat matching and does make the upload look worse.
Before you publish
1. Clean the fingerprint
For any reused footage, process the file so the audio-visual signature no longer matches the reference. This is the step that changes the outcome.
2. Upload unlisted first
Publish as unlisted or private and let processing finish completely.
3. Check the Copyright tab
In YouTube Studio, open the video's Copyright tab. Claims normally appear within minutes of processing.
4. Fix, then go public
If something is flagged, trim, swap the audio or re-process — then switch the video to public. Your audience never sees the claimed version.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a video copyright free?
Either every element is your own or properly licensed, or the material is genuinely in the public domain. For reused footage, the practical goal is avoiding an automated match rather than claiming ownership you do not have.
Does fair use make my video copyright free?
No. Fair use is a legal defence argued after the fact, not an automated exemption. Content ID matches before any human considers context, so transformative edits still get claimed.
How do I check a video for copyright before publishing?
Upload it as unlisted, wait for processing, then open the Copyright tab in YouTube Studio. Claims appear there within minutes.
Is public domain footage always safe?
The footage may be, but a specific restoration, remaster or soundtrack added to it can be separately owned and registered. Check what exactly you are downloading.
Can I make an existing claimed video copyright free?
You can trim the claimed segment, replace the audio, or publish a cleaned re-upload. You cannot retroactively change the claim on a file that already matched.
