Audio claims

How to remove copyrighted music from a YouTube video

Audio is the layer that gets matched most often. A video full of original footage will still be claimed for a background track, and Reels get muted for exactly the same reason. There are three real fixes, and they suit different situations.

The three fixes

  1. 1. Mute the claimed section

YouTube Studio can silence just the matched segment on the live video. Fastest fix, but you lose the audio entirely for that stretch.

  2. 2. Swap in a licensed track

Replace the song from Studio's audio library, or re-edit with royalty-free music and re-upload. This is the cleanest long-term answer for background music.

  3. 3. Clean the audio fingerprint

When the music is part of the source footage — a movie scene, a match broadcast, a reaction clip — you cannot simply swap it out. Fingerprint cleaning rewrites the audio signature so the match no longer fires, while the scene still sounds like itself.

Why pitch-shifting and nightcore edits fail

Audio matching normalises pitch and tempo before it compares. Speeding a song up, slowing it down, shifting the key or layering light noise over it are all handled by the matcher. What you get is a worse-sounding video with the same claim attached.

Instagram and Facebook Reels

Meta runs its own audio matching, which is what silences a Reel on upload. The same logic applies: licensed audio avoids it entirely, and fingerprint cleaning handles the cases where the music is baked into the footage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove copyrighted music from a video I already published?

Use the audio tools in YouTube Studio to mute or replace the claimed segment on the live video. The URL, views and comments stay intact.

Does changing the pitch of a song avoid copyright?

No. Audio matching normalises pitch and tempo before comparing, so a shifted track still matches. It only makes the audio sound worse.

Can I keep the original music and still avoid a claim?

When the music is part of the source footage, the practical route is cleaning the audio fingerprint so the automated match does not fire. It does not give you rights to the track.

Why are my Instagram Reels muted?

Meta's audio matching recognised the track. Either use licensed audio or clean the audio signature of the footage before uploading.

Is royalty-free music always safe?

Mostly, but some royalty-free libraries are also registered in Content ID, which produces a claim even though you have a licence. Keep your licence receipt — those disputes are straightforward to win.
